On a clear day, the view from the summit sweeps across Takamatsu Port and the islands scattered over the Seto Inland Sea. Shishi-no-Reigan, the best-known lookout, is also famous for its sunsets — it's listed among Japan's 100 Best Sunsets.
Yashimaru, which opened on the summit in 2022, is a ring-shaped building with a curving observation corridor about 200 m long, designed by Takayuki Suo, formerly of SANAA. The flowing glass and curves are worth seeing in themselves.
Yashima is where the Battle of Yashima (1185) was fought between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Looking down from Dankorei at the coast of Dan-no-ura, you can picture the famous scene of the archer Nasu no Yoichi shooting a fan off a boat. The panorama exhibit inside Yashimaru retells the story.
A shuttle bus connects the foot of the mountain with the summit, which makes it easy to get up without a car. It runs only on limited days with few trips, so check the schedule on the official site first.

Yashima-ji is the 84th of the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage (Ohenro), and you may see pilgrims in white clothing paying their respects. There is also a pilgrim trail up from the foot of the mountain, which takes about 40 minutes to an hour on foot.
