Make the Most of Your Visit

1The 1,368 Steps Challenge

The main shrine (Go-Hongu) is at step 785. The inner shrine (Oku-sha) is at step 1,368 — fewer tourists make it here, and the views are incredible. Take it slow and enjoy the journey.

2Kago (Palanquin) Service

If climbing is difficult, porters carry visitors in traditional palanquins (kago) to step 365 for ¥6,800 round trip. Available daily, first come first served.

3Lucky Yellow Charm (Ki-Mamori)

The shrine's signature yellow good-luck charm (Ki-Mamori, ¥800) is said to bring happiness. Only available at the main shrine — a perfect souvenir.

4Kanamaru-za Kabuki Theater

Japan's oldest existing kabuki theater (built 1835) is just a 10-min walk from the shrine. Tours available for ¥500. Every April, special kabuki performances are held.

5Sanuki Udon in Kotohira

Kotohira town has excellent udon shops. Refuel after your climb with thick, chewy Sanuki udon at one of the local favorites near the shrine approach.

6Walking Stick Rental

Free bamboo walking sticks are available at the base of the approach. They really help on the stone steps, especially coming down. Return them when you finish.

Beautiful in Every Season

Spring

March – May

Cherry blossoms line the approach and shrine grounds. The Kotohira Kabuki Festival at Kanamaru-za every April is a major draw, featuring top kabuki actors.

Summer

June – August

Lush greenery provides shade along the stone steps. Summer festivals with traditional rituals bring energy to the shrine. Early morning climbs beat the heat.

Autumn

September – November

Maple trees blaze red along the mountain paths, creating stunning contrasts with the shrine buildings. Comfortable temperatures make this the best season for climbing.

Winter

December – February

Quiet and serene. New Year's hatsumode (first shrine visit) is a major event. Far fewer tourists mean a more contemplative experience climbing the steps.
